Vegan Information
Last Updated 20 August 2008
The following is vegan information that I link to here mostly for my own convenience. The photo shown above is of a meal my good friend Iguchi-san arranged for me at a Ryokan.
Vegan Bakeries, Restaurants and Other Food Sources
Honest Weight Food Co-op
(Albany) We visit once a week.
Bombers Burrito Bar
(Albany) We eat here at least once each month. Very veggie friendly with meat substitutes.
Antipasto's
(Clifton Park) Located in the largest suburb north of Albany.
Four Seasons Natural Foods
(Saratoga) Good buffet
Thunder Mountain Curry (Troy) Street food at its finest. Mike Gordon is on the RPI campus in the student union now and also at the Troy Farmers' Market on Saturdays. His food is wonderful. I have also had him cater parties and picnics, which were great. There is no webpage but there is info at

Food For Thought
(Albany) -- Outstanding new vegan cafe on Madison near Lark. Unfortunately, they have already gone out of business. One can still get Vegan Calzone and a few other things at Little Anthony's at the same location.
Karavalli Indian
Regional (Latham)
Le Commensal (
Toronto
Montreal Laval Quebec City Rive-Sud
)
Windmills Cafe
(Kingston, Ontario) -- Very vegetarian friendly and nice people. Good place to go for groups with mixed diets (like my family).
The Blossoming Lotus
(Kauai and Portland) -- Amazing restaurant, worth it for the presentation and the attractive waitstaff.
Babycakes
(New York) Bakery on Broome
Curry Hill (New York) Lexington Avenue between 27th and 30th Streets has many Indian restaurants, with a couple of blocks of south Indian vegetarian.
Kaka'ako Kitchen
(Honolulu) Usually very good and cheap, but sometimes a dud. Veggie selections are good, but they don't always have them. Good casual dining on plastic.
The Chicago Diner
(Chicago, duh!) One of the most famous veggie restaurants, their deserts are now sold at Whole Foods in the Midwest. It is located in
Boystown
(it seems like gay neighborhoods always have good veggie restaurants) and not far from Wrigley Field (I hope the Cubs get to the Series one of these years).
Wishbone
(Chicago) Veggie Friendly
Terrene
(St. Louis) Very veggie friendly. Excellent food.
Cardwell's At The Plaza
(St. Louis) Veggie friend, excellent restaurant in a mall!
The Shangri-La Diner
(St. Louis) Very unique
New Pioneer Food Co-op
(Iowa City)
The Red Avocado
(Iowa City) Worth the trip to central Iowa, even for a Badger football fan.
Hamburg Inn
(Iowa City) Good veggie burgers and an Iowa City institution.
Willy Street Co-op
(Madison) Best co-op anywhere. Outstanding sandwiches, cookies, soups for takeout.
Monty's Blueplate Diner
(Madison) Very veggie friendly, possibly our favorite restaurant, and part of a collection of restaurants in and around Madison owned by
Food Fight, Inc
.
Bluefies
and
Hubbard Avenue Diner
(Middleton) are also excellent. Bluephies has recently become less vegan friendly, since they no longer offer tofu as a chicken substitute for their noodle dishes. However, Hubbard Avenue is more vegan friendly so you just have to go to Middleton rather than Monroe Street.
Weary Traveler (Madison) A very special place with food for all since it has great burgers and vegan faire (probably not for people who like traditional American food) There is no webpage, but it gets mentioned on many, many blogs.

Gridskipper
Maharani (Madison) Does not have a web page but info can be found on the
Isthmus Eats
page; excellent place recommended by my daughter Meghan. Pretty heavy on the dairy, but has good stuff for vegans.
The Manatee Cafe
(St Augustine) Typical of almost everything in Florida, this excellent little restaurant is in a strip mall west of town.
Brighter Day Natural Foods
(Savanna) Food store
Kung Food
, aka the Vegetarian Zone (San Diego) Wonderful restaurant in Hillcrest area, again now out of business. Some of their items will be available at Jimbo's and Whole Foods in Southern California. I drove by in late May 07 and it looked like another restaurant was going in at this location. I hope it is similar.
Harvest Natural Foods Café (Jackson Hole) Only open for lunch.
Liz Lovely
(Waitsfield, Vermont) Excellent cookies available at many organic food stores (eg Willy Street, New Pioneer and Honest Weight) and online.
Sticky Fingers Bakery
(Washington, DC) Great for gifts.
Zed's Ethiopian
(Georgetown) Veggie friendly
Gillies
(Blacksburg, Virginia) Veggie friendly (also has seafood)
Down to Earth Natural Foods
(Oahu and Maui)
Kokua Market
(Honolulu)
McCuskers Market and Deli
(Shelburne Falls, MA)
WaterCourse Foods
(Denver) Their vegan pastries and cookies are wonderful. The food is amazing.
Beans and Barley
(Milwaukee) They also have wonderful cookies and pies from
East Side Ovens
.
