Quizzes and Assignments

QUIZZES:

There will be 3 quizzes and 1 final. Attendance is mandatory and there will be NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES. For students with excused absences from quizzes, the other quizzes will be counted higher. The quizzes will be closed book and no crib sheets are allowed. Instead, we will provide a copy formula sheets . The quizzes will probably be completely in-class. However, it is possible that a take-home problem(s) will be handed out for some quizzes. Further information will be provided with each quiz.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:

Homework will be longer assignments that build on material already covered in class. For each homework that is due, there will be a open shop in the classroom to work on the assignment. We will try to pass out homework assignments about 1 week before they are due.

We expect that work outside class on reading, preparation, and homework assignments will average 8 hours per week for a typical student.

You are encouraged to work in groups (2 to 4 is a good number) on these assignments, but each student is required to hand in the assignment separately.

PROJECTS / DESIGN PROBLEMS

There will be two project assignments in addition to the homework. These will be open-ended problems with more than one answer possible. They generally will require a combination of some of the following: design, computer calculations, graphics and experiments. Ideally, they all have some design aspect, but in practice that is not always true. They are intended to take more time than the homework. Assignments will be passed out at least 2 weeks before the due dates. You are encouraged to work in groups of 2 or 3. You only have to turn in one assignment per group. Updates and clarifications are frequently posted about these problems.
