He was later appointed Curator of Contemporary Canadian Art and Administrator of the Curatorial Department, a position he held until 1979. From 1979 to 1985, Pierre Théberge was Chief Curator at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. In 1985-1986, he founded and became president of Arthéme PGT Inc., a company specialized in the organization of exhibitions. Pierre Théberge has organized several major exhibitions in Canada and abroad, written numerous catalogues, and published many articles in journals and exhibition catalogues in Canada and abroad. Between 1986 and 1991, Mr. Théberge and the Museum's Board oversaw the planning and construction of a new 220,000-square-foot pavilion designed by architect Moshe Safdie, and launched a major fund-raising campaign, drawing $27.5 million in private sector contributions and $33 million each from the federal and provincial governments. In 1991, the opening of the new Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion more than doubled the space for the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, as well as the Museum's professional technical services. Since 1980, Pierre Théberge has been directly responsible for the organization of the Montreal Museum's major special exhibitions, which attracted a record six million visitors between 1980 and 1994, including visitors to the Museum's other exhibitions and activities.
