HAPPENINGS:

MST VENT
The vent was very uneventful. Diagnostics were removed and Mark began
working on the first port (HIBP primary) Tuesday. Sealing
surface prep. and hold down rod points have yet to be finished and
drilled.

PRIMARY BEAMLINE TRANSITION CHAMBER
The primary beamline transition chamber needs to be leak checked with both
the bellows and gatevalve installed prior to its installation on the
machine. Uday is working on this. Mark hopes to have the port and
hold-down rod tapped holes done next Tuesday and would like to install the
chamber to test its fit into the port and the fit and function of the hold
down rods. There are two possible scenarios for completing this task.
The first is install the two chambers necessary for the test fit; the
hemispherical section and the spool piece with the two hold-down rings and
the spacer. All of which could be removed after the test run. The second
and preferable option is to install the shutter and sweeps into the
hemisphere and spool piece, and for both sections to be installed with
the intention of leaving them in place once they are installed, and
installing a simple sealing plate on top of the last flange. The reason
to simply blank off is addressed in the next section.

PRIMARY BEAM LINE SUPPORT STRUCTURE
Tom Lovell is promissing delivery of a design for the support structure by
mid week next week. Stewart and I spoke about this delay or schedule
slippage this morning. He will keep abreast of Tom's progress next Monday
and Tuesday.

HIGH VOLTAGE SHELF
Bill and I have finished installing the high voltage shelf, and it is 90%
painted. The remainder of the painting will be done by hourlies as their
availability and time permits; it in no way will delay or impact
installation of our equipment.

HIGH VOLTAGE ENCLOSURE
The high voltage platform is now finished and the high voltage enclosure
can now be installed.

CHAMBERS IN STORAGE
Everything once in storage is now here.

LABORATORY SPACE
Being painted, new ceiling installed and doors rekeyd.

REYNOLDS (ROWE) CONNECTORS
Connector (cable assembly) was shipped on 6/1. It was shipped to Troy.
Has it arrived?
Receptacle to be shipped 6/23.

SECONDARY BEAMLINE TRANSITION CHAMBER
Mark would like for the secondary beamline port on MST to be available for
as long as possible just in case he
should need access through it into the MST chamber. I propose that we
install the secondary beamline transition chamber to make sure that
everything fits, and then remove it
from MST, to be reinstalled when the secondary beamline (or end of vent)
arrives.

SCHEDULES
Would Paul, Ken and John please send me email and let me know what your
anticipated schedules are in relation to HIBP installation and shakedown.
In particular, do you expect, or would you like to be here for any of it,
and if so, at what point and for what parts?

SHUTTER
The shutter (and small box) arrived on Thursday. I have not yet unpacked
or inspected it.

Week of June 14, 1999

HAPPENINGS:

PRIMARY BEAMLINE TRANSITION CHAMBER
The HIBP primary beamline port is nearing readiness for primary transition
chamber installation. The transition chamber was slid into the port on
Friday, and measurements were made for the hold down rods. I anticipate
that the hemispherical section of the primary beamline transition chamber
will be installed on Tuesday. There was much discussion last week
concerning the angle of the sweep plates relative to the machine. Lei
calculated that the angle of a straight line connecting the center of the
mini-conflats on the hemispherical
chamber (which are parallel to the 4 5/8" conflat flanges, which are
parallel to the deflecting surface of the sweep plates) should be rotated
.37 degrees relative to a poloidal cut in the machine. Therefore, unless
there are any objections, we will install the chamber
with the line formed by drawing a straight line through the center of both
mini-conflats, parallel to the plane of a poloidal cut in the machine
(essentially 0 deg.). Mark will align the top flange of the chamber with
the same 3 deg and 15 deg of the port.

SHUTTER
The shutter is now installed in the primary beamline transition chamber
hemisphere. Mini-conflat gaskets and feedthru leads have yet to be
tightened and attached. The shutter rotates nicely (HOORAY JOHN!). There
is a bit of slop in actuating its rotation. I suspect the looseness is
originating at the nylon spool which connects the rotary feedthru shaft to
the shaft extending out of the shutter. The nylon spool/bearing is
held in place with two set screws; one on the rotary feedthru shaft the
other on the shutter shaft. The shafts (metal) are threaded, the nylon
bearing is not. The feedthru roation, resulting
in little or no motion of the shutter, is on the order of 5-8 degrees. I
will play with the feedthru some more prior to its installation on the
machine and e-mail a more quantified report.

Another concern is the robustness of the pickup wires on the shaft.
Continuity was checked following installation, and all wires were found to
be shorting to the metal shutter. Inspection showed that two beads
underneath the shutter disk (the side facing MST plasma) had come
un-epoxied. I peeled, as best I could, the epoxy from the beads and the
metal disk, and super-glued the beads back in place. Much to my pleasant
surprise, the wires did not break. On the other hand, the springs
tensioning the wires stretched and shorted to the shutter arm. The small
sheet of kapton, which John had slipped under the springs to avoid such
shorts, had slipped loose. We managed to slip it back into place, but the
likelihood of its staying in place is suspect. I tried to place a drop of
super-glue at each of the two exposed edges to help hold it in place, but
I am not sure if it adhered to the kapton. In summary, I think the
shutter is presently functional, but when time allows, we should revisit
the shutter design issue; In particular pick-up wire connections and
insulation from the shutter. Also, the nylon spool connecting the shaft
from the rotary feedthru with the shaft from the shutter.

(PRIMARY BEAMLINE TRANSITION CHAMBER) GATE VALVE AND BELLOWS
Uday and Lei have leak checked the primary transition chamber bellows and
gate valve. Both appear to be tight - this was the conclusion on Friday.
Today, Monday, they have again found a leak. They are trying to
localize the leak. Any suggestions regarding leak chasing welcomed via
e-mail.

PRIMARY BEAM LINE SUPPORT STRUCTURE
Tom has (today) delivered a materials list for the support structure.
Support structure design drawings yet to come.

HIGH VOLTAGE SHELF and HIGH VOLTAGE ENCLOSURE
The high voltage enclosure is in the process of being installed.

HIBP GROUNDING
Soon to come...e-mail from Ken summarizing discussion.

REYNOLDS (ROWE) CONNECTORS
Receptacle shipping date revised from 6/23 to 7/19.

RADIATION MONITORING
I have spoken with John Sarff, Tom Lovell and Dan Den Hartog regarding
radiation monitoring. Dan feels we should not contact safety, but should
monitor radiation levels ourselves. I am unable to locate any monitoring
devices here at MST. We will be needing what is available/not-in-use at
RPI. The remainder we will need to borrow or purchase. In particular, I
am looking for audible monitors, recording meters, pencil dosimeters... I
will be looking into this further, but if anyone has any information on
radiation monitoring that they would like to pass along, send me e-mail.
I send a follow-up report when I have a better plan and more information.
Apparently, we do not need to register the accelerator as a radiation
device.

Week of June 21, 1999

HAPPENINGS:

PRIMARY BEAMLINE TRANSITION CHAMBER
The primary beamline hemispherical section of the transition chamber is on
the machine. Mark aligned it in the proper orientation. Will send more
info. about its alignment next week.

GATE VALVE AND BELLOWS
Uday removed the bellows and had the weld re-flowed. He had trouble, Wed
eve., putting the bellows back onto the gatevalve - gasket leaky. Is
continuing to work on it today.

STACKS AND DIVIDERS
The stacks are now sitting up on the HV deck. The dividers have not yet
returned from being calibrated - we expect them in the next week or so.

PRIMARY BEAM LINE SUPPORT STRUCTURE
Drawings were received from Tom Lovell on Monday evening, June 21.
Work has begun on fabricating the pieces of the structure and supports. I
am hoping that the majority of it will be installed by next (7/2) Friday;
this may be a bit optimistic, but we'll try.

HIGH VOLTAGE ENCLOSURE
The high voltage enclosure is in the process of being installed.

HIBP GROUNDING
No progress yet from this end - have been focusing on other things.

PRIMARY BEAM DETECTORS AND ROTARY DETECTOR
Lei has installed the primary beam detectors into the MST pumping ports -
an uncomfortable area to reach within the machine. Feed thru for
primary beam detector wiring/signals yet to be installed. Assembly of the
rotary detector is progressing.

SCHEDULES
Any firmer idea of travel dates (Ken, Paul, John)?
