ENGR-4300
Electronic Instrumentation

Goals

Provide engineering and science students with practical, hands-on experience in the application of electronic instrumentation methodology (modeling, analysis and design) and tools (sensors, instruments, basic electronic hardware and simulation software). Course pedagogy is primarily discovery-based.

Background

Studio Activities

This is a studio course and, thus, it combines lectures, problem solving, simulation, laboratory experiments, and laboratory projects in the same classroom and timeslots. We meet for a total of 6 hours each week. Each class meeting will be divided up in to activities (lecture, lab, etc.) that will last anywhere from 10 minutes to the entire class period. Homework problems, lab experiments, project reports, etc. will still have particular due dates, which will be listed in the calendar below. Since this document is electronic, it will be continuously modified throughout the semester.

Graded Work

Following long-standing traditions, topical quizzes will be graded on a 100 point scale while homework, experiments, and project reports will be graded according to the percentage of the overall course grade. Practical quizzes are graded on a credit/no credit basis.

Schedule

Please Note That This Schedule And The Materials Posted Will Change Weekly. The pdf files for each of the experiments, projects and homework assignments will be posted below about the same time as pape r copies will be distributed in class. Since these assignments will be similar to those of last semester, the older versions will be posted until the new versions are ready so that you can see what to expect. To be sure that you have the correct assignme nts for this semester, check the revision date on the bottom of each page. Last year's versions are colored orange and this year's are colored green.

Week One (8/27-8/31): Introduction to studio instrumentation: function generator, dc power supplies, protoboards, components, digital multimeter, oscilloscope. Introduction to PSpice.
Week Two (9/3-9/7): Continue to address topics of Week One and address some basic concepts from circuits and electronics.

Week Three (9/10-9/14): Continue Week Two topics and move on to time varying circuits.

Week Four (9/17-9/21): Complete instrumentation and the introduction to passive circuits and begin work on operational amplifiers

Week Five (9/24-9/28): Define and work on the first project.

Week Six (10/1-10/5): AC Steady State & Filters

Week Seven (10/8-10/12): Diodes

Week Eight (10/15-10/19): Complete passive circuits and the introduction to op-amps and diodes,
then move on to other mostly analog active devices before we transition to digital electronics.

Week Nine (10/22-10/26): Project 2

Week Ten (10/29-11/2): More on op-amps and magnetic circuit components

Week Eleven (11/5-11/9):Complete transitional electronics and begin project 3.

Week Twelve (11/12-11/16):Project 3.

Week Thirteen (11/19-11/23): Digital electronics.

Week Fourteen (11/26-11/30): Digital electronics, continued.

Week Fifteen (12/3-12/7): Complete digital electronics and begin Project 4.

Weeks Sixteen and Seventeen (12/10-12/18): Study/Review and Final Exams
